Differentiated Services
A scaleable solution for the provisioning of QoS in today’s Internet.
Scaleable because of traffic aggregation - aggregation based on the DS byte (called the TOS originally) in the IP header.
IP packets are classified and marked to receive a particular per hop behavior (PHB).
Complex classification, shaping, policing and marking are all done only at the border routers in a DS domain.
Intermediate routers simply need to implement forwarding based on the DSCP. (Diff Serv Code Point)
Assured Forwarding PHB and Expedited Forwarding PHB.
